Neighbourhood guide

Living in Fresnaye on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard

Fresnaye is a quiet residential suburb wedged between Lion's Head and the Atlantic, between Sea Point and Bantry Bay. It is one of the most walkable and, by reputation, one of the safest neighbourhoods in Cape Town — which is why it works well for people arriving from abroad who want to settle in fast without renting a car.

From Utopia you are two minutes from shops and the ocean, on the sunset side of the mountain. Mornings tend to be still, afternoons carry the summer south-easter, and the light on the water in the evening is the reason people come to this side of the city.

What's within reach

Two minutes to the shops

Grocery stores, cafés and restaurants sit at the bottom of the hill, so day-to-day errands happen on foot rather than by car.

The Sea Point Promenade

A long paved ocean-front walk for running, cycling and sunsets, a short stroll from the house and busy with locals all year.

Clifton and Bakoven beaches

Cape Town's most sheltered beaches are a few minutes down Victoria Road — close enough for an after-work swim.

Lion's Head and Signal Hill

Trailheads are minutes away. Lion's Head is the classic sunrise or full-moon hike, and the house looks straight at it.

Eating out

Sea Point's Main Road and Regent Road are packed with restaurants, and the V&A Waterfront and city centre are a short drive.

Getting around

Uber and Bolt are cheap and everywhere, the MyCiTi bus runs along the seaboard, and there is free parking at the house if you drive.

Why remote workers choose this side of the city

The Atlantic Seaboard has become the default base for digital nomads in Cape Town: the time zone lines up with Europe, the cost of living is low against most hard currencies, and co-working spaces, gyms and cafés are dense along Sea Point's Main Road. What usually catches people out is load shedding — which is why every desk at Utopia stays online through an inverter.

Living in a co-living house rather than a solo apartment also solves the part nobody plans for: knowing people. Housemates here are a mix of locals and internationals, so the neighbourhood becomes familiar in days rather than months.
